How do lenses destroy ultrashort light pulses? — •Jörg Neuhaus, Stephan Malkmus, and Markus Braun — Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Lehrstuhl für BioMolekulare Optik, Oettingenstraße 67, 80538 München
The collimation of ultrashort pulses in the fs-regime and the control of the beam diameter often is realised with telescopes. As for ultrashort pulses not only the phase velocity, but also the group velocity plays an important role, the use of strongly focussing lenses can lead to undesired spatial chirp of the pulse. This spatial chirp reduces the time-resolution in a pump-probe experiment.
We present simulations of a pulse after propagating through a system of lenses and by means of these calculations acquire optimal parameters for telescopes in use. The simulations are compared with experimental results, utilising autocorrelation and crosscorrelation measurements as a tool for determining the spatial chirp.
