Near infrared microspectroscopy of biomolecules — •Andreas Bergner, Erik Bründermann, Ilona Kopf, Robert Schiwon, and Martina Havenith-Newen — Physikalische Chemie II; Ruhr-Universität Bochum; 44780 Bochum

Most biomaterials have significant absorption lines in the infrared region, the so-called fingerprint region, hence it is very interesting to combine the advantages of normal microscopy and infrared laser spectroscopy. So far, microscopy of living materials often requires the use of toxic fluorescent dyes. Using our technique it is possible to obtain a chemical landscape of the cells without damage and in a natural environment. In first measurements we use an infrared diode laser (λ = 1,53 − 1,57 µm) to measure the water absorption in rat hepatocytes. With changing osmolarity of the medium we can see a swelling or shrinking of the cells.
