On the control of Cl+ versus D+ formation in the fragmentation of DCl+ ions - a numerical wave packet study — •Karl-Michael Weitzel1 and Mikhail V. The dissociation and predissociation of hydrogen chloride ions (HCl+ or DCl+) have been investigated extensively in recent years. From that work we know that dissociation of ions in the electronic ground state, 2Πi(i=1/2, 3/2) leads to the formation of Cl+ , while predissociation from the first excited electronic state A 2Σ+ via the repulsive states, 4Σ 2Σ 4Π , leads to the formation of H+ (D+) ions. Under certain conditions the formation of H+ (D+) and Cl+ directly compete, which can be easily distinguished in a mass spectrometer.

In the current work we present results of numerical wave packet calculations aimed at controlling the yield of competing product channels in the fragmentation of DCl+) . Here we have investigated the effect of the following parameters: i. laser frequency, ii. laser intensity, iii. Laser pulse duration and iv. chirp. This investigation clearly shows that the control of product yield Cl+ vs. D+ should be feasible by choice of the appropriate laser field parameters.
