For a cluster irradiated by a strong laser field, the electron dynamics are nonlinear due to the finite size of the system. This causes the presence of the third harmonic of the incident laser field both inside the cluster and in the scattered field. Since for ionized clusters of noble-gas atoms usually the Mie frequency is close to three times the (incident) Ti:Sapphire-laser frequency, the third-harmonic field may experience strong resonant enhancement. This leads, in particular, to efficient production of multicharged ions and x-ray emission in the cluster, as well as to resonant behavior of the cross section of third-harmonic generation. This cross section and the yield of multicharged ions are calculated for various laser parameters and cluster media and compared with the available experimental data.
