Generation and Photoelectron Spectroscopy of some Transient Species in Atmospheric Chemistry — •Zheng Sun1 and Dianxun Wang21Lehrstuhl II für Physikalische Chemie der Technischen Universität München, Lichtenbergstr.4, 85748, Garching b. Atmospheric chemistry has been a rapidly growing field with a recent focus on the global environment changes, which include stratospheric ozone depletion, photochemical smog, acid rain and global warming etc. Molecules of alkyloxyl, alklynitrene, alkylthio radical are found to play an important role in the pollution process. This report is on the investigation of the generation, detection and electronic structure of these unstable species.

A novel method of pyrolysis to generate short-lived species/radicals is proposed, i.e. molecular sieve is used to decrease the temperature of the pyrolysis reaction; nitrogen monoxide (NO) is used as stabilizing reagent to prolong the lifetime of the unstable species. With this pyrolysis method, several radicals such as (CH3)3CO, (CH3)2CHN, (CH3)2CHO, CH3CH2N, CH3CH2O, CH3CH2S, CH3O, CH3N, CH3S are generated. The conventional Photoelectron Spectroscopy (PES) studies on these species provide not only the ionization potentials of these species but also the property of different ionic states of their cation. These studies on the unstable species will enhance the deep research on their effect and reaction mechanism in atmospheric chemistry and broaden the field of PES study.
