A novel method for the spatially resolved ultra-sensitive and element-selective trace analysis is presented. The main concept is based on the combination of a commercial MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer, originally conceived for biomolecular analytics, with a pulsed tunable laser system for the resonant postionisation of neutrals. The analytical qualities are pointed out, such as the mass resolution, the overall detection efficiency, the element selectivity, the spatial resolution and the accuracy in the determination of isotopic ratios. Furthermore, a convenient way to perform an in situ mass calibration is explained.
In view of further applications, the methodical developments were done using the elements gadolinium (Z=64) and uranium (Z=92), closely connected to cosmochemical questions and to the environmental trace detection of actinide elements in the latter case.
