Mass Spectrometry with Electrostatic Ion Traps: Negative Mass Instability — •Daniel Zajfman — Dept. of Particle Physics, Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Rehovot, Israel
We demonstrate that it is possible to achieve motion synchronization in an electrostatic ion trap due to the so called negative mass instability. This instability is due to the repulsive Coulomb interaction among the stored particles, which in a counter-intuitive way lead to a quasi-coherent motion. We will show that such an effect can be used to increase the mass resolution of the system.
