We investigate the influence of the laser prepulse due to amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) on the acceleration of protons in thin-foil experiments. By changing the ASE duration and the foil thickness independently, the generation of one or two different proton populations becomes possible. By comparing the experimental results with analytical estimates for the proton acceleration at the target front and rear sides, the origin and acceleration process of the different proton populations can be determined. The possibility to control the duration of the ASE prepulse is found to be important for an optimal proton acceleration.
