Collimated MeV jets of ions from the rear surface of thin foils irradiated with ultrashort laser pulses at intensities around 1019 W/cm2 are investigated. We use a Thomson parabola both to characterize the ions and to measure their respective spectrum and yield. In previous single shot experiments with high power (100 TW) laser facilities, energies of up to 5 MeV/nucleon and particle numbers reaching 1010 per MeV were measured [1]. This was explained by a modified target normal sheath acceleration mechanism (TNSA).
New experiments at the 100-TW-laser facility (LULI, Ecole polytechnique) were performed. We used heated targets in order to remove undesirable hydrocarbon contaminants on the target surfaces. Different materials were used and a series of shots with "buried" layers was done to get new insights into the acceleration mechanism.
