High light intensity photoassociation in a Bose-Einstein condensate — •Thomas Gasenzer — Institut für Theoretische Physik, Universität Heidelberg, Philosophenweg 16, 69120 Heidelberg, Germany
We investigate theoretically the single-color photoassociation yield of Bose-Einstein condensed sodium atoms for light intensities of the order of and above those applied in a recent experiment [C. McKenzie, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 120403 (2002)]. Taking into account second order correlations formed in the many body system by the elastic atomic collisions under the influence of the photoassociation laser, we derive the time evolution of the remaining condensate fraction. Our results give no indication for the saturation of the loss rate of condensate atoms due to reasons other than the unitarity limit. We discuss the physical grounds for the possibility of intensity enhanced atom loss as well as the limits for the production of ground state molecules.
