We revisit the concept of geometric entropy with the tools of entanglement theory in infinite-dimensional quantum systems. We consider the von Neumann entropy associated with a distinguished region in a discretized free massless scalar field in its ground state. We show that the entropy is proportional to the area of the boundary surface without relying on numerical estimates. We investigate the continuum limit leading to an associated field theory, and consider the degree of entanglement in case of thermal states associated with some non-zero temperature.
