We report on the development of a compact, table-top laser source at 1 kHz repetition rate based on Ti:Sapphire with a pulse energy of 7 mJ as a tool to generate hard x-rays as well as High Harmonics.

The set-up consists of a commercially available oscillator-amplifier CPA system and a second multipass amplifier with the Ti:Sapphire crystal cooled by liquid nitrogen to 93 K to increase the thermal conductivity and therefore avoid the thermal lens formed by the pumping lasers. The output energy of 7 mJ was obtained while pumping the crystal with total 40 W of two frequency doubled Nd:YLF lasers. The following pulse compressor consists of two triple-prism sequences, compressing the stretched laser pulses to nearly transform-limited 45 fs pulses. The performance of the nitrogen cooled amplifier concerning pulse duration and pulse energy is discussed and compared to theoretical calculations.
