Characterization of an ultrashort pulse Ti:Sapphire laser system with a high, variable repetition rate — •Jana Hüve, Thorben Haarlammert, and Helmut Zacharias — Physikalisches Institut, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, 48149 Münster

We constructed a Ti:Sapphire oscillator-amplifier system with a high, variable repetition rate. Usually such systems are operated at a fixed repetition rate, often about 1 kHz. In our system the repetition rate is adjustable between 5 and 40 kHz due to cavity dumping of the oscillator. The amplifier is a multipass system with 8–12 passes with a liquid nitrogen cooled crystal. A frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser with an average power of up to 70 W pumps the amplifier.

In order to characterize the amplifier system, we measured pulse duration, frequency spectrum, and amplification factor. The latter was examined depending on the width of the oscillator spectrum, the foci of pump and oscillator beam, and was compared at one and two passes of the pump beam. Effects limiting the amplification were investigated by stretching the oscillator pulses in time to different durations.
