The coupling between a particle plasmon resonance and an optical waveguide mode leads to a strong modification of the optical response. In the case of interaction of these two resonances, a new quasiparticle (waveguide-plasmon polariton) is formed. In the present work, the decay time of particle plasmons in a planar metallo-dielectric photonic crystal slab structure (PCS) is investigated. We deposited gold nanodiscs with a diameter of 150 nm and a height of 21 nm by electron-beam lithography on a 100-nm-thick tantalum-dioxide (TaO2) slab waveguide. For measuring the particle plasmon decay time in the time domain, we used a second-order interferometric autocorrelation method. The measurement was performed with 13 fs pulses from a home-built Ti:Sapphire laser. By comparison of the measured autocorrelation function with the simulations based on a damped harmonic oscillator model it is possible to extract the decay time of the particle plasmon oscillation. When changing the coupling strength between the particle plasmon and the waveguide mode, we observe a polariton beating and a prolonged plasmon decay time.
