The capability of an antenna to capture energy from a radiation field and concentrate it on a small volume shall be exploited for nano-optics and near-field optical microscopy. Plasmon resonances distinguishes optical antennas from their radiowave counterparts and result in a very high field enhancement for appropriate geometries. These and a variety of other new effects, for instance a strong optical trapping capability, are attracting more and more attention within the field of nanoscale science and technology. First basic antenna structures are realized on flat glass substrates by means of e-beam and focused-ion-beam lithography. We started optical near-filed measurements to characterize the field distribution around the antenna structures for comparison of some properties with expectations based on established antenna theory and numerical optical antenna simulations.
