Spatial optical solitons are of interest due to their ability for self-adjustable waveguiding and versatile interaction capabilities like light-induced Y and X couplers. However, these investigations were up to now limited to single solitons. Here we investigate theoretically and experimentally the behavior of large two-dimensional lattices of solitons and their waveguiding capabilities. In such a case, neighboring solitons may experience repulsion or attraction depending on phase-dependent coherent as well as separation-dependent incoherent interactions. Lattices composed out of incoherent solitons were found to be more stable than lattices with coherent in-phase solitons for identical conditions. We use the manipulation of phase across the lattice to achieve closer packing while maintaining propagation without interaction. Further we show the interaction of different beams with the lattice.
