Vector Solitons, i.e. multicomponent light beams that jointly self-trap in nonlinear media, have been the subject of extensive research in the field of spatial optical solitons. Almost all investigations have been done in copropagating configurations of the light beams. Recently, attention has been drawn to the formation of vector solitons by counterpropagating light fields, which promise qualitatively new behavior, including temporal dynamics [1].

We present results of two-dimensional experimental investigations of different configurations of counterpropagating fields in a photorefractive strontium-barium-niobate crystal (SBN). We demonstrate a variety of solutions for two counterpropagating gaussian beams, ranging from steady state solutions to temporal dynamics wih periodic or quasiperiodic behavior. We show trapping of a dipole-mode beam by a counterpropagating gaussian beam, forming a single counterpropagating soliton. Our experiments confirm the theoretical notion that no qualitative difference exists between mutually coherent and incoherent light beams. Good qualitative agreement with numerical investigations of the model is shown.
