An ultracold dense gas of Rydberg atoms — •Kilian Singer, Markus Reetz-Lamour, Thomas Amthor, and Matthias Weidemüller — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Freiburg, 79104 Freiburg
We have realized a frozen gas of Rydberg atoms at densities where interaction effects are expected to play an important role. The interaction is caused by the polarizabilities and electric dipole moments of Rydberg atoms. The temperature of the gas is in the µK regime so that thermal motion is negligible during Rydberg excitation. First experimental results are presented.
