Ultra-cold Fermi Gases: From Bose-Einstein Condensation of Molecules to Fermi Superfluidity — •Christophe Salomon — Département de physique de l’Ecole Normale Supérieure, Laboratoire Kastler Brossel, 24 rue Lhomond, 75231, Paris, France
We will describe recent experiments on ultra-cold Fermi gases and efforts towards the observation of fermionic superfluidity. Using Feshbach resonances in a two-component Fermi gas, it is possible to tune the strength and sign of the effective interaction in the gas. This gives access to the strongly interacting regime for which recent theoretical calculations predict a large increase of the superfluid transition temperature. For large and positive scattering length, it is possible to produce very efficiently cold molecules from the Fermi gas. Surprisingly, the lifetime of these giant dimers is very long, enabling the production of Bose-Einstein condensates of molecules and a novel method to approach the superfluid transition.
