We investigated a novel scheme of Type II second harmonic generation (SHG) of Gaussain laser beams both theoretically and experimentally. We show that the conversion efficiency can be increased by spatial separation of the o and e beam in the principal plane of the crystal. This is due to decreased influence of spatial walk-off. In the case of short laser pulses the influence of group velocity mismatch can be decreased by additional insertion of temporal delay between the pulses. Experimental results are presented for type II SHG in KDP and BBO at a fundamental wavelength of 1053 nm and 800 nm, respectively.
