We report on our current developments towards the detection of ultracold polar LiCs molecules to be produced via photoassociation out of a mixture of ultracold 7Li and 133Cs atoms. In a first step, photoassociation spectroscopy has been performed on Cs2 in a quasi-electrostatic dipole trap (QUEST) formed by a focussed 100 W CO2-laser beam. Detailed investigations of saturation effects are discussed.
In addititon, we study cooling processes, in particular Raman sideband cooling [1], in the QUEST in a new experimental setup. The aim is to create a Bose-Einstein condensate [2] as a cooling agent to sympathetically cool the lithium into quantum degeneracy.
