On atom chips various atom optical elements have been realized using magnetostatic and electrostatic potentials created by surface-mounted microscopic wire structures. Here we present a next step to make these atom chips become an universal toolbox for fundamental experiments in quantum optics as well as for possible applications like quantum information processing. Our first experiments aim at the detection of single atoms in miniaturized traps using optical fibre cavities. We will describe our setup, give details of the fabrication of a fibre cavity, and present first experiments. The experiment is funded by the Landesstiftung Baden-Württemberg and the EU (ACQP collaboration).
