We have previously reported on the development of a novel and versatile design concept for miniature diode-pumped solid-state lasers. A silicon microbench with wet-etched V-grooves for the precise alignment of all components in DPSSL is used to obtain efficient heat removal from the laser crystal [1]. Using this concept we have achieved miniature lasers with cw power of 6.7 W, a really amazing performance considering the lateral dimensions of the laser crystal of just about 1 mm. Recently, we have expanded this concept to new carrier materials. An interesting example is a polymer encapsulated diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser [2]. Large production volumes at a very low cost are possible. This development has been enabled by progress in commercially available polymers with high thermal conductivity. The latest results from the micro-structured carrier concept for DPSSL are reported. Passively Q-switched lasers mounted in a silicon microbench or in a polymer encapsulation are presented. The Q-switched silicon microbench laser gave an average output power of 2 W in 1.4 ns pulses.
