Noise in phase-coherent supercontinua generated in microstructure fibers — •Nils Haverkamp und Harald R. Telle — Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Bundesallee 100, 38116 Braunschweig

We investigated the comlex intensity modulation transfer function for supercontinuum (SC) generation in microstructure fibers (MSF), i.e. we measured, how intensity fluctuations of pulses coupled into a MSF translate into intensity and/or phase fluctuations in the fiber output spectrum. For SC generation with pulse energies of some 200pJ in 120 mm of Lucent MSF, we found intensity modulation gain factors not larger than 100, and nonlinear phase shifts not exceeding 40 rad per percent of pulse energy change.

In future apllications, such as optical pulse synthesis and using a self referenced frequency comb as an optical clock work for an optical frequency standard, the short term stability depends on the magnitude of intensity and/or phase fluctuations in the comb spectrum. We measured the fluctuations induced by input pulse intensity fluctuations and show, that our Ti:Sa-comb-generator can be used to transfer the short term stability of any optical frequency standard to any optical or radio/microwave frequency with an instabilty of 10E-15 in one second.
