Quantum diffusion and spectral properties in the delta kicked harmonic oscillator — •Andre R. R. Carvalho and Andreas Buchleitner — Max-Planck-Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems, Nöthnitzer Str. 38, D-01187 Dresden

The classical delta kicked harmonic oscillator can exhibit very interesting phase space structures depending on the ratio between the oscillator and the kicking frequencies. For rational values of this ratio, a stochastic web covers the phase space following a crystal or quasi-crystal symmetry while the energy of the system can grow in a diffusive (linear in time) or anomalous way, depending on the initial condition. The quantum mechanical version of this model, that could be implemented in ion traps experiments, can show different behaviors for the energy growth ranging from complete localization to faster than classical diffusion. We analyze the quantum diffusion scenario and its relation to the spectral properties of the system. In particular, we study the role of an effective Planck’s constant (which is related to the Lamb-Dicke parameter in ion traps) in the different diffusion regimes.
