The main idea of black hole analogues is to consider an alternative set-up based on laboratory physics which reproduces major features – such as Hawking radiation – while the underlying physics is (at least in principle) well understood. Since we do not yet know the underlying description which unifies quantum field theory (such as electromagnetism) and gravity, the investigation of such analogies might shed some light on related problems, for example the trans-Planckian origin of the Hawking radiation. While light in ordinary dielectrics can – at least in principle – be used to build an black hole analogue, it turns out that slow light (electromagnetically induced transparency) cannot be used as an analogue displaying Hawking radiation. Even though an appropriately designed slow-light set-up may simulate classical features of black holes – such as horizon, mode mixing, “Bogoliubov” coefficients, etc. – it does not reproduce the related quantum effects.
