We present a new approach to reconstruct the Wigner function of motional states of trapped atoms as well as field states in cavities. This method is derived for Fresnel kernels and for a class of alternative intergral kernels, too. We analyze its properties, in particular, the connection between the considered state and the measurement time that is necessary to reconstruct the Wigner function sufficiently well. Furthermore, we generalize this approach to wave packets in arbitrary potentials.
