Thermal spin flip rates of atoms near wires — •Stefan Scheel, Per-Kristian Rekdal, Peter L. Knight, and Edward A. Hinds — Quantum Optics and Laser Science, Blackett Laboratory, Imperial College London, Prince Consort Road, London SW7 2BW, UK

We will derive the spontaneous and thermal spin flip rates for an atom trapped above a current-carrying wire. By means of quantizing the electromagnetic field in dielectric surroundings, it is shown that this spin flip rate can be expressed in terms of the Green function of the associated classical scattering problem. We compare our numerical results with the experiments in [1] and find them to be in good agreement. With this theory, we are able to predict trapping lifetimes in future miniaturized atom chip experiments and derive associated scaling laws.
