Wave-guided travelling-wave laser action and distributed-feedback laser action in neat thin films of a thianthrene-phenyl-vinylene-paraphenylene (TPVPP) dye on glass substrates and corrugated gratings have been achieved by optical excitation with picosecond laser pulses (wavelength 347.15 nm, duration 30 ps). The dye is a model compound of paraphenylenevinylene polymers. The travelling-wave laser emits at 544 nm. The threshold pump pulse energy is about 60 nJ. The distributed-feedback laser is wavelength tunable in the range from 520 nm to 580 nm by variation of the groove spacing and the film thickness. The refractive index and absorption cross-section spectra of the films are determined by reflectance and transmission measurements. The fluorescence behaviour of TPVPP neat films and TPVPP solutions was analysed. A fluorescence quantum yield of about 0.6 is found for both TPVPP neat films and TPVPP in 1,4-dioxane.
