The Heavy Ion Transport Code PHITS and Its Applications — •Hiroshi Iwase1 and Koji Niita2 — 1Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung mbH, Planckstr. 1, 64291 Darmstadt — 2Research Organization for Information Science and Technology,2-4,Shirakata,Tokai-mura,Naka-gun,Ibaraki-ken, 319-1106,Japan
The three dimensional heavy-ion Monte Carlo transport code PHITS (Particle and Heavy Ion Transport Code System) is an upgrade version of the NMTC/JAM, which is a spin-off of NMTC and has been maintained at JAERI (Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute). In PHITS, the JQMD and GEM codes are used for nucleus-nucleus interactions. PHITS calculations have compared to experimental data [1,2] on the production of secondary neutrons in high-energy heavy-ion reactions using thin/thick targets and various projectiles at the HIMAC facilities (Chiba/Japan). Good agreement was obtained for the resulting energy spectra of secondary neutrons.
Recently the PHITS code has been applied to some heavy-ion studies at GSI, such as a shielding calculation, the response of a BaF2 detector to high-energy neutrons, and a magnet design for the Future project. Finally a new concept for the code improvement/expansion by using new models or by modifing the existing models, will be presented. [1]T. Kurosawa et al., Phys. Rev. C62, 044165(2000) [2]Y.
