Characterisation of coastal/marine aerosols: Contributions to understand new particle formation from biogenic iodine precursors — •Thorsten Hoffmann1, Hongwei Chen1, Rolf Brandt2 und Norbert Jakubowski2 — 1Johannes-Gutenberg University of Mainz, Duesbergweg 10-14, 55099 Mainz — 2Institute of Spectrochemistry (ISAS), Bunsen-Kirchhoff-Str. 11, 44139 Dortmund
The study of the sources and formation pathways of new particles in the troposphere is presently a subject of considerable interest, prompted by the role of aerosols in global climate change and their influence on heterogeneous processes in the atmosphere. Uncertainties in the natural background source of atmospheric aerosol particles complicate estimates of the influence of anthropogenic aerosols. Therefore, one goal of current research activities is the identification and quantification of natural particle formation processes in the troposphere. Recent field and laboratory studies also point to coastal sites as a biogenic source region for new particles. The current understanding is that volatile iodine precursors, such as diiodomethane, which are released by marine algae, or even molecular iodine are photolysed during daytime and form low volatile iodine oxides which finally self-nucleate. This contribution will present results from laboratory studies on new particle formation potential from naturally released volatile iodine compounds as well as results from field measurements (Mace Head/ Ireland) on the chemical composition of the coastal/marine aerosol particles (e.g. regional and temporal variation, tidal influence).
