Retrieval of a NO2 altitude profile by using MAX-DOAS-measurement — •Roman Sinreich, Barbara Dix, Chistoph v. Friedeburg, Udo Frieß, Magdalini Halasia, Suniti Sanghavi, Thomas Wagner und Ulrich Platt — IUP Heidelberg
>From May through September 2003 Multi-Axis(MAX)-DOAS-Measurements
using scattered sunlight have been performed at the Institute of
Environmental Physics in Heidelberg (Germany, 49.25∘ N,
8.42∘ E) to determine local NO2 and
O4 slant column densities. The instrument was mainly pointing
westward in direction of the city of Mannheim, since this region is
expected to contain the highest concentrations of NO2 due to
the high traffic and industrial activity.
Several elevation angles were
chosen to observe the atmosphere along different viewing directions. Air
mass factors for several aerosol scenarios were modelled using the
radiative transfer model Tracy. A detailed study was performed exemplarily
for a clear afternoon (14th of July 2003) comparing
measurements of O4 and NO2 with corresponding
model results to find the best matching profile both for aerosols and
NO2-values.
Due to the combination of MAX–DOAS
measurements with the radiative transfer model the quantitative estimation
of the total mixing ratio of trace gases is now possible opening a wide
worldwide field for this technique in future.
