Wavelet covariance transform technique for boundary-layer top determination from automatic lidar measurements — •Holger Baars2 and Dietrich Althausen11Institute for Tropospheric Research, Leipzig, Germany — 2University Leipzig, Leipzig, Germany

At the Institute for Tropospheric Research we developted a small Raman lidar Polly (portable, automatic mini Raman lidar system) to perform automatic, unattended measurements of particle backscatter and extinction profiles. Because often the height of the planetary boundary layer is needed for atmospheric pollution monitoring and modelling we present investigations of the possibility to determine the boundary layer top and/or the transition zone from Polly data. The wavelet covariance transform technique is applied to the lidar backscatter profiles. A short description of the Raman lidar Polly and the used data retrieval procedures will be presented. The potential and the limits of the wavelet covariance transform technique regarding boundary-layer top determination will be discussed.
