The paper discusses data on atmospheric ozone, water vapour, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides that are being collected since 1994 in the framework of the European MOZAIC project. Utilising automatic measurements from five long haul passenger aircraft, the project has delivered a wealth of information on the chemical composition of the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, in addition to vertical profiles over many cities in the Northern Hemisphere. More than 20000 flights have been successfully completed. Topics discussed are the seasonal and interannual variability of ozone, the distribution of nitrogen oxides, exchange between troposphere and stratosphere, and the comparison of predictions by the global chemistry transport model MOZART with the MOZAIC data set.
