The aim of this work is the formation of thin PNIPAM layers on metal electrodes. A quartz crystal microbalance was used for monitoring the polymerisation.
The polymerisation of NIPAM crosslinked with bisacrylamide was initiated by metallic ions from sacrificial anodes in the presence of peroxydisulfate. The formation of the anion radicals SO4• − as initiator and the consequent polymerisation is therefore controlled by the current flowing through the system. Since polymerisation starts at the electrode the gel forms at the surface. We now concentrate on improving adhesion properties.
Depending on the temperature of polymerisation and degree of crosslinking, PNIPAM layers show a lower critical solvent temperature (LCST) behaviour and as a consequence, the formation of a lateral structure.
Layer properties are investigated as a function of temperature, of applied voltage, degree of crosslinking, of monomer concentration, and other system parameters.
