UV depletion of space charge studied with the Laser Intensity Modulation Method — •Francisco Camacho González, Axel Mellinger, and Reimund Gerhard-Multhaupt — Institut für Physik, Universität Potsdam, Am Neuen Palais 10, 14469 Potsdam, Germany
Recent experiments have indicated the presence of deeply trapped space charges in polymeric electrets [1]. To obtain further information on the trap depths, various polymer films (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, cycloolefin copolymers, and amorphous Teflon® AF) were charged with either a corona–discharge or contacting electrodes. The charge and the polarization profiles during UV irradiation were monitored in situ using the Laser Intensity Modulation Method (LIMM).
A key advantage of this technique is its capability to non–destructively probe of space–charge distributions in electrets. The experimental data was analyzed using a combination of the scanning function method and an iterative approach [2]. This novel technique is capable of reconstructing unsmooth distributions without requiring a–priori assumptions about the shape of the polarization profile.
