The energy transfer from the band states into the Mn 3d5 shell in (II,Mn)VI wide-gap diluted magnetic semiconductors is a well known feature of the bulk compounds. As a result the luminescence properties of these materials are dominated by the yellow luminescence band of the lowest transition in the Mn 3d5 shell between the 4T1 (S=3/2) first excited state to the 6A1 (S=5/2) ground state. The energy transfer between the two subsystems, extended band states and Mn 3d5 shell, is a Dexter-Förster like process. The mechanisms for overcoming the violation of the spin selection rule Δ S=0 are still under debate. We present first studies of the luminescence and transfer dynamics of the yellow Mn-luminescence in Zn1−xMnxS nanowires with diameters ranging from 3 to 9 nm and x between 0.01 and 0.3.
