Renormalizing into the mesoscopic quantum Hall insulator — •Philipp Cain1, Rudolf A. Römer2, and Michael Schreiber11Institut für Physik, Technische Universität, D-09107 Chemnitz — 2Department of Physics, University of Warwick, Coventry CV4 7AL, UK

Using the Chalker-Coddington network model as a drastically simplified, but universal model of integer quantum Hall physics, we investigate the plateau-to-insulator transition at strong magnetic field by means of a real-space renormalization approach. Our results suggest that for a fully quantum coherent situation, both the Hall insulator with diverging Hall resistance RH and the quantized Hall insulator with RHh/e2 can be observed depending on the precise nature of the averaging procedure.
