Conventional semiconductor based electronics rely on the charge of many electrons for triggering transistors. In contrast, we attempt to reach the regime in which a logical bit is defined by a single electron spin. Here, quantum information processing promises new prospects regarding the basic notions of computing. Qubits defined by single electron spin states in lateral quantum dots can combine long coherence times with an easily tunable electrostatic confinement.
We discuss our novel split gate geometries and present first results towards manipulating electron spin states in quantum dots in the limit of few electrons.
