Focussing Effects in 2D Photonic Crystals — •Frank Hagmann1, Kurt Busch1,2, and Peter Wölfle1 — 1Institut für Theorie der Kondensierten Materie, Universität Karlsruhe — 2School of Optics/CREOL and Department of Physics/University of Central Florida, Orlando, U.S.A.
Using the multiple multipole method [1] we analyze the optical properties of finite-sized two-dimensional Photonic Crystal waveguiding structures. In particular, we study the beaming and focussing abilitites of various types of straight waveguides and the connection of these effects to surfaces modes. We show how different surface terminations as well as surface impedance variations of waveguides allow one to obtain control over the focussing properties. These enhanced beaming properties will aid in the design and development of future Photonic Crystal based devices and of optical interconnects between Photonic Crystal functional elements and standard index guiding optical components.
