Hydrogen diffusion experiments on amorphous alloys — •J. Bankmann, A. Pundt, and R. Kirchheim — Institut für Materialphysik, Tammanstr. 1, 37077 Göttingen

The experimental determination of diffusion of hydrogen in amorphous multicomponent alloys is a difficult task. As these materials are very briddle, they easily build cracks or even break due to the volume expansion when they are loaded with hydrogen. Therefore breakthrough experiments in an electrolytical double cell where such a crack allows a shortcircuit diffionsion leads to no results. We present a new technique where a thin film of the interesting material is one layer of a multilayer system. The resistivity of another layer underneath the first one is monitored. The change in the resistivity after loading the upper layer gives the breakthrough time for hydrogen in this system. We will present the results of hydrogen diffusion in a four component amorphous Zr-based alloy.
