A squeeze cast AZ31 magnesium alloy was deformed using ECAP (equal channel angular pressing). Compression tests on AZ31 specimens that did not undergo ECAP were used to optimize the pressing conditions. The microstructure of the ECAP–deformed material was determined using transmission electron microscopy. For example, after a single ECAP pass at 240∘C a partially recrystallized structure containing grains with an average size of about 1 µm was observed. Mechanical properties as determined using uniaxial compression tests and Vickers hardness investigations were correlated with the strain accumulated.
