Design of a scanning tunneling microscope for variable temperatures in an ultra-high-vacuum environment — •Stefan Kuck, Germar Hoffmann, and Roland Wiesendanger — Institut für Angewandte Physik und Zentrum für Mikrostrukturforschung, Universität Hamburg, Jungiusstr. 11, 20355 Hamburg

To study the temperature dependence of the growth and the local electronic/magnetic properties of molecular systems, we designed a variable temperature scanning tunneling microscope (VT-STM). The whole compact and rigid microscope body is connected to a liquid helium flow cryostat and rests on a commercially available damping stage. The STM is installed in an ultra-high-vacuum system for insitu preparation of substrates free of contamination. Molecules are sublimated from mobile evaporators, whereby deposition onto substrates mounted and cooled in the STM is possible. We will discuss the design concept of the system and present first results.
