The magnetization of small transition metal clusters is, in general, a nonmonotonous function of their size. [1,2] We have characterized the magnetization of a number of atomically size-selected CoN clusters in the size range between N=13 and N=60 atoms per cluster with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements. Strong size dependences are indeed observed. Contrary to the general expectation, Co55 posesses a very high spin magnetic moment of ≈ 3 µB per atom. Based on our results we propose that the strong magnetization around N=55 correlates with peculiarities around this cluster size in the gas phase anion photoelectron spectra [3].
