We studied the chemical composition and the temperature dependent behavior of Pd/Zn/ZnO catalysts that are used for methanol steam reforming. Real catalysts coated on microstructured foils have been used and their performance has been characterised in a high pressure flow apparatus under realistic reaction conditions. We investigated these samples by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) with Al Kα radiation. Utilizing a high pressure XPS system the experiments were performed in-situ and in the presence of methanol and water vapour in a pressure range up to 1 mbar, at different temperatures. These measurements allow to establish a correlation between the different activities for the methanol steam reforming and the chemical composition of the catalysts surface.
