Unusual magnetic transition and its consequences — •Alexei Abrikosov — Materials Science Division, Argonne National Laboratory, 9700 South Cass Avenue, Argonne, IL 60439, USA
A theory of the phase transition from an insulating antiferromagnet to a metal in layered cuprates is constructed on the basis of a spin-density wave model. The transition occurs to be of the second order at smaller dopings and of the first order at larger ones. The influence of impurity scattering is analyzed. A phenomenon of an infrared transparency threshold is predicted for the insulating phase. For the metallic phase the experimentally observed phenomena of anti-ferromagnetic “bubbles” around nonmagnetic impurities and “week antiferromagnetism” in the metallic and superconducting phases are explained.
