Methods for the quantitative analysis of high-resolution micro-tomography datasets of metallic foams — •Oliver Brunke1, Stefan Odenbach1, and Felix Beckmann21ZARM Universität Bremen, Am Fallturm, 28359 Bremen — 2GKSS, Max-Planck-Str. 1, 21502 Geesthacht

Metallic foams are a rather new class of porous and lightweight materials offering a unique combination of mechanical, thermal and acoustical properties. Their high stiffness to weight ratio, acoustic damping properties and thermal resistance provide possible applications in automobile industry for instance as crash energy absorbers or acoustic dampers, or in aerospace industry for lightweight parts in rockets or aircrafts. A promising and versatile tool for the non-destructive investigation of the structure of metallic foams on a µm scale is X-ray or synchrotron X-ray tomography. This technique yields 3D-datasets of the whole foam structure. We will describe quantitative methods for the analysis of the pore and material space of the µCT foam data and present first results obtained by analysing foams examined at the W2 Beamline at HASYLAB/DESY .
