Viscous Transport in Dirty Fermi Superfluids — •Dietrich Einzel1 and Jeevak M. Parpia2 — 1Walther-Meissner-Institut, Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften, 85748 Garching — 2Dept. of Physics, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853, USA
The transport theory of clean Fermi superfluids like 3He–A,B is generalized to include strong elastic scattering from impurities represented by a system of low density silica arogel strands. The dynamics of the aerogel system is taken into account within a collision–drag model. In particular, we calculate for the first time the viscosity of superfluid 3He–B in the presence of impurity scattering both in the Born and the unitary limit. The shear viscosity dominates the attenuation of transverse sound, the general dispersion relation of which is also provided by our theory. The observability of the shear viscosity is discussed in context with recent torsional oscillator experiments.
