Quasinormal mode expansion for solutions of the wave equation with a potential — •Nikodem Szpak — Institut für Theoretische Physik, J.W.Goethe-Universität Frankfurt, 60054 Frankfurt

A study of wave propagation in nontrivial backgrounds leads to a wave equation with an effective potential. Expansion of its solutions into a set of quasinormal modes will be discussed. The problem of validity of the expansion for arbitrary potentials remains open. It is unclear in which region of spacetime the expansion is possible. Estimations for that region depending on the properties of the potential and the support of initial data will be presented. Results of numerical simulations of the initial problem, where the quasinormal modes are observed, will be shown.
