The Thin-Sandwich Problem: A Status Report — •Domenico Giulini — Physikalisches Institut, Hermann-Herder-Str.3, 79104 Freiburg
The No-dqthin-sandwich problemNo-dq arises in the initial-value formulation of Einstein’s equations. The idea is to find a workable alternative to the mostly used No-dqconformal methodNo-dq for solving the elliptic system of initial-data constraints. The conformal method suffers from the deficiency that only the conformal equivalence-class of the Riemannian metric on the Cauchy surface may be freely specified. So, for example, there is no direct control over distances and masses of initially present black holes. The thin-sandwich method aims to overcome this conceptual deficency, at the price of being mathematically obstinat.
